Yes/No Questions

Yes/No Questions are a type of inquiry, enabling you to get straightforward answers with a simple “yes” or “no”. In German, the standard word order for declarative sentences is subject-verb-object (SVO). However, for questions, the verb typically moves to the first position, with the subject following. Here’s a simplified breakdown:

  • Original Statement: Subject + Verb + Rest of Sentence.
  • Question: Verb + Subject + Rest of Sentence?

Example:

Original Statement:Question
Maria liest ein Buch.(Maria is reading a book.)Liest Maria ein Buch? (Is Maria reading a book?)
Wir gehen morgen ins Kino. (We are going to the cinema tomorrow.)Gehen wir morgen ins Kino? (Are we going to the cinema tomorrow?)
